I welcome interest in our ‘poetryfeasting’ site content and would happily create ideas for classroom teaching/sharing aids for poetry at a negotiable price.

i rarely use
the services of the bank
but today
i stood in the teller queue
behind a young man shopper

in his recyclable
high vis carry bag
was a single 1.25L popular brand
soft drink and
a largish bag of potato crisps

i couldn’t help noticing
his up-sized personal account
his high-risk investment portfolio
recommending to me
a life with too little interest

in my industrial days
i was aware that
something almost spiritual occurred
when striking an engineer’s hammer
against steel,
rearranging its shape
for a productive outcome

from afar i see,
in too many contexts,
we now bang our heads

“Mental health patients waiting for hours,
sometimes days in emergency departments”

wait
in emergency
disoriented, over-anxious or
psychotic –
cope with delayed treatment
overseen by busy, tired
but incapacitated medical staff
unable to assess –
underinvestment

present
in the community
disoriented, over-anxious or
psychotic -
lunge at an underprepared
attending police officer
and expect instantaneous,
full, unqualified attention –
overinvestment

time is not on our side

i find it unsettlingly poignant
that amongst the most disadvantaged
the crew/the mob/the socio-economically deprived
one could deliver unto a fellow;

“she’ll be right mate!”

the positioning
of climate change deniers
begs a question:

“how can my feet remain grounded
while i keep my head above water?”

As vintage approaches

do you, after that first sip,
drift to foreign parts
late summer
blue skies
endearing heat of the season’s sun
an air of business
bronzed and protected
gathering the rich harvest
teamwork in extended days
before the vigneron declares
superior product

or do you, like me,
as an irregular consumer
accept that mediocrity
is singularly, your best return
