This Year's Poems

This Year's Poems

we plan to own
our memories

to gild them with
metaphor

talk them into years
of togetherness

stalk the indifference
of others

bathe in this story

the poetry of our lives.

Poetic Sun #ISSUE4 (poetic-sun.com)
i was despondent
in childhood
over suffocation
of eagerness

unwelcome
discipline
& unyielding
boundaries

the uncertainty
principles
& so
i wasn’t surprised
by failure
but

i did not anticipate
love.

Two Poems | Discretionary Love

be aware
that
when you fall
you will clutch
at anything
to avoid
the unanticipated
hurt
of a guardian push

you say
        give it to me
        straight
        forthright
don’t hold back

that you can take it
no matter the pain

use the knife edge
you say
        sharp
        pointed
        between the ribs

keep me on my toes
you demand

that way
you say
        you’ll know
        i love you

it’s

an opportunity

life

a gift

with rights

for protection

security

to adopt possessions

authority

& reputation

          that can set you up.

entrapment (arielchart.com)

our increasingly
reckless behaviour
like a carelessly lit match
is rooted in guilt
residual doubt
gnawing at us
harassing us
in minuted hours
of stultifying routine
then long restless nights
begun with that ‘big bang’
while aside
& imprecisely
we only seek to measure effect
as wanton schoolboys
who watch a paddock burn
        something must have ignited it
